4K LED Wall Weight: Cabinet Count First, Then Ask If the Building Can Hold It

Churches and rental shops still order a “4K LED wall” the way they order a TV. Then the truck arrives, someone counts the cabinets, and the roof engineer says no.

In July 2026 a US sanctuary that already owned a P2.6 wall — 15 cabinets wide by 3 high, each about 500 x 1000 mm — found the roof purlins could take almost no hang load. The panels were fine. The building was not. That is not a rare story. Integrator guides published through spring and summer 2026 keep repeating the same sequence: buy pitch and nits first, discover weight and steel later.

4K is a pixel count, not a screen size

UHD is 3840 x 2160 pixels. Cabinet size and pixel pitch decide how large that canvas is in meters.

SFxDisplay rental cabinets are 500 x 500 mm or 500 x 1000 mm. At P2.6 the real pitch is 2.604 mm, so a 500 mm edge is 192 pixels.

A 10 x 6 m P2.6 wall is a touring hang, not a 165-inch display. If the room is a 4-5 m-wide sanctuary backdrop, you are not buying 4K. You are buying a rectangle that matches the stage, then mapping content onto whatever native resolution that grid actually has. That is the honest order: width x height from the room, pitch from the closest seat, then pixel count. Not the other way around.

The July 2026 church wall (15 x 3 of ~500 x 1000, P2.6) is 7.5 x 3.0 m. Native pixels are about 2880 x 1152. It is not 4K. It is a very large IMAG/lyric surface, and it still has to hang.

What that wall actually weighs

We do not print a single kilogram on this blog as if every cabinet were identical. Die-cast aluminum 500 x 500 rental cabinets commonly land around 6-8 kg. 500 x 1000 cabinets commonly land around 11-15 kg. Modules, power boxes, indoor vs outdoor, and GOB coating move the number. Use the weight on the PO, not a catalog average.

A 12 ft-wide P2.6 sanctuary wall is often quoted in the 180-360 kg (400-800 lb) band. That is still too much for drywall, light-gauge studs, or roof purlins that were never designed as hang points.

Add the hang bar, shackles, cables, and any truss. A common planning add-on is 15-20% on top of cabinet mass. Then the engineer applies a safety factor. Entertainment hanging often uses 5:1 as a planning floor (WLL = breaking strength / 5). Permanent installs and local code can ask for more. We do not certify rigging. Your rigger and the building engineer do.

Hang, ground-stack, or wall-mount

Three ways to keep a wall in the air. Pick one from the building, not from the brochure.

Hang (fly). Rental cabinets clamp into a rectangle, a fly bar bolts to the top row, and that bar hangs from rated points. Points belong on primary beams or an engineered truss tied into those beams. Purlins, decorative wood, and “the lighting pipe that already holds a few PAR cans” are not a structural report. If the roof cannot take the load, hanging is not cheaper. It is parked.

Ground-stack. Cabinets sit on a base and climb. No roof load. You need a level floor, a rated base, ballast against tipping (often on the order of 50-100% of wall weight — follow the base maker, not a blog), and a height limit. Ground-stack still fails if the stage cannot take the concentrated load, or if a tall wall is under-ballasted. It is the usual answer when the sanctuary roof is the problem and the platform is not.

Wall-mount. Fixed indoor cabinets bolt to steel, not to gypsum. Front service matters here: once the wall is on a solid back, you cannot walk behind it. That is SFF-IC / SFF-IS indoor fixed, not a touring rental box pressed against drywall. If the back wall is metal studs and paint, budget steel first.

SFxDisplay rental series (SFR-S soft lock, SFR-H hard lock) is specified for hanging and stacking. Lock style does not change the physics. A hard lock is stiffer in a tall hang; it does not make the roof stronger. See soft vs hard connection.

500 x 500 vs 500 x 1000 is a handling decision

Same 7.5 x 3 m wall:

  • 500 x 1000 -> 15 x 3 = 45 cabinets
  • 500 x 500 -> 15 x 6 = 90 cabinets

Fewer cabinets means fewer locks, fewer power/data jumps, and a faster rectangle. The 500 x 1000 box is twice as tall, so each lift is heavier and less handy in a tight stairwell. 500 x 500 wins on columns, returns, and odd heights. Many shops stock both in one pitch and one lock family, then mix them on one hang only when the series is built to mix. Cabinet size does not replace a load calc. 45 heavy cabinets and 90 lighter cabinets can put the same kilograms on the same four pick points.

What to send before you buy the panels

A useful brief is shorter than a 4K wishlist:

  1. Finished width x height, or a photo of the wall with a tape in the frame
  2. Hang, ground-stack, or wall-mount — and whether a structural engineer has already looked
  3. Indoor or outdoor, closest seat, cameras yes/no
  4. Power you actually have (single 20 A circuit is not a 10 m wall)

We will return a 500 x 500 / 500 x 1000 count, the cabinet mass from that BOM, a spare-module note, and whether the job wants SFR-S, SFR-H, or a fixed indoor series. Steel, motors, and permits stay with the integrator on site.

FAQ

How much does a 4K LED wall weigh? There is no one number. At P2.6 on 500 mm cabinets, a ~10 x 6 m native-4K-wide wall is on the order of 1.3-1.8 t of cabinets before steel. A 7.5 x 3 m church backdrop is a few hundred kilograms of cabinets, which is still enough to fail a purlin.

Can we hang it from the existing lighting truss? Only if that truss and its building attachments are rated for the extra point loads, including a safety factor. “It already holds lights” is not a calculation.

Is ground-stack safer than hanging? It removes the roof question and creates a floor and ballast question. Safer is the method the building can actually support.

Do 500 x 1000 cabinets weigh twice 500 x 500? Roughly, on the same series, because they hold twice the modules. Compare the spec sheet, then compare packed case weight.

Will SFxDisplay spec the steel? We spec cabinets, hanging bars that belong to the cabinet, and stack bases. Building steel, motors, and engineer stamps are local work. We will not pretend a blog post is a rigging plot.
