When a buyer asks for a soft connection LED cabinet or a hard connection LED cabinet, they usually mean the LED rental cabinet lock — how one box pulls the next box tight when you hang and stack LED. That is cabinet-to-cabinet hardware on a touring LED wall. It is not nits, pitch, or the picture on the face.
SFxDisplay builds two rental lock styles: SFR-S (soft) and SFR-H (hard). Both are rear maintenance LED cabinets. Both ship as 500×500 and 500×1000 rental cabinet sizes. The lock is the choice that changes load-in speed and how a hung seam behaves after a truck ride.
The same two words are also used for module-to-HUB wiring (ribbon vs pin). That meaning is real, and it ranks in search, so it gets a short section below. If a quote only says “hard connection,” ask cabinet lock or module HUB. Mixing them is how a shop orders the wrong part.
Two meanings, one RFQ risk
1. Cabinet-to-cabinet lock (this page). In factory language this is 软连接 vs 硬连接. Soft lock vs hard lock LED here means how cabinets join on a hang or a ground stack. SFR-S is the soft style. SFR-H is the hard style.
2. Module-to-HUB connection. A “soft” module still uses a ribbon (FFC) to the HUB board. A “hard” module docks on pins — cable-free at the module. That choice is about service time and a flying ribbon that can fatigue. It is not the same as the edge lock that holds a touring LED wall together.
Lead with the lock. Specify the HUB style on the same PO if you care about ribbon vs pin, but do not let that sentence replace the lock sentence.

Soft connection (SFR-S): speed and frequent rebuilds
An SFR-S cabinet is a soft connection LED cabinet with fast edge locks, rear service, and a cost-effective touring frame. Crews join and split it without treating every lock as a structural event. The join has a little compliance. That is a feature when the wall is a different rectangle every night.
SFR-S tends to win when:
- The inventory is LED video wall rental work that rebuilds several times a week
- Crews are mixed — house staff one day, local hands the next
- Load-in windows are short (corporate gala, ballroom, indoor stage)
- Budget and speed sit above a multi-day hung face
Rear maintenance LED is standard: modules, power supplies, and receiving cards from the back. You can hang or stack. Pitch, IP, and cabinet size are chosen the same way as the rest of the rental series.
The tradeoff is play. On a tall hang, a long run, or a wall that sits in wind and vibration, a soft lock can want a second check, and a hairline seam is more likely to walk. That is not a defect report. It is the reason the hard lock exists.

Hard connection (SFR-H): rigid lock, touring hang
An SFR-H cabinet is a hard connection LED cabinet. The LED rental cabinet lock is more rigid. Cabinets pull together with less give, which is what you want on a touring LED wall that hangs for days, rides a truck between cities, or sits in front of cameras that will find a seam.
SFR-H tends to win when:
- The hang is tall, or the face is a long run
- The wall stays up (festival, residency, multi-day outdoor)
- Vibration is part of the job (outdoor stage, motors on the truss)
- IMAG or broadcast will shoot the wall and you do not want a lock to relax overnight
You still hang and stack LED. Rear service is still the maintenance path. You spend a few more seconds per lock and get a stiffer wall. That is the product, not a slogan.
The tradeoff is time and cost. A 40-cabinet rebuild with a mixed crew is slower on a hard lock. If the wall comes down at midnight and goes up in a new room at 9 a.m., SFR-S is usually the honest box.
Do not mix SFR-S and SFR-H in one hang unless the factory confirms the locks mate. They are different mechanics. Order one lock style per wall.
Pitch, 500×500 vs 500×1000, IP, refresh
The lock does not replace the usual rental spec. Buyers still choose these on both SFR-S and SFR-H:
Pixel pitch from viewing distance. Coarse outdoor and long-throw indoor still live around P3.91. Indoor workhorse rental is still P2.9, with P2.6 when the first row is closer. P1.9 and P1.5 are close-view; they are easy to overbuy for a 10 m backdrop. Distance first, then pitch — the same order as any other wall.
500×500 vs 500×1000 rental cabinet. 500×500 mm packs and hangs flexibly and takes more locks. 500×1000 mm is faster on a large rectangle and halves the cabinet count on the tall axis. Many shops stock both in one pitch so a 6 m wall is not an odd puzzle. The lock style (SFR-S or SFR-H) should be the same across both sizes in one hang.
Indoor IP44 / outdoor IP65. Indoor and outdoor cabinets differ in nits, seals, and often thickness. Hang one type. Stock both if the book needs both. IP is not a lock feature.
Refresh for cameras. If clients bring cameras, treat 3840 Hz as a floor and 7680 Hz when the jobs are concerts, worship IMAG, or broadcast. Write it on the PO with the lock style. A rigid hang with a low refresh still looks like a rolling shutter problem.
Decision checklist
Write these down before you pick SFR-S or SFR-H:
- How many times will this wall be rebuilt in a typical month?
- Hung, stacked, or both? Tallest hang, in cabinets?
- Same two technicians, or mixed crews?
- Indoor IP44, outdoor IP65, or two inventories?
- Closest viewer (sets pitch) and cameras yes/no (sets refresh)
- 500×500, 500×1000, or mixed in one pitch?
A working rule, not a promise:
- Rebuild speed and mixed crews lead → SFR-S
- Hang stiffness, tall faces, and multi-day touring lead → SFR-H
- Both in the shop is normal if the book is split. One lock per wall.
If you only need a sanity check: a corporate indoor inventory that changes size every Saturday is a soft-lock job. A festival hang that must still look tight on day three is a hard-lock job.
Spec the lock on the same line as pitch
