How to Choose LED Pixel Pitch by Viewing Distance (P1.5 to P3.91)

Pixel pitch is the center-to-center distance between pixels on an LED display, written as P1.5, P2.6, P3.91, and so on. The number is millimeters, not a quality score. Choose it from the closest seat that still has to look good.

If that seat is about 8 m (26 ft) back, P2.6 rental cabinets are usually enough. If people stand 1.5 m from a lobby wall, you are in COB indoor range. If the crowd sits 20 m from a stage, P3.91 is often the honest buy. Finer than the closest viewer can resolve spends money on pixels nobody sees.

This guide covers the pitches SFxDisplay builds for rental and indoor work (P1.5, P1.9, P2.6, P2.9, P3.91), the two rules buyers mix up, and why a 12-foot-wide wall is not 4K.

What pixel pitch measures

Each pixel is a red, green, and blue cluster. Pitch is the gap from the center of one cluster to the next. Halve the pitch and you roughly quadruple the pixels in the same area. That is why P1.5 costs more per square meter than P3.91. You are buying more diodes, more driver ICs, more heat, and tighter seams.

Pitch does not tell you brightness, weather rating, or camera behavior. A coarse outdoor wall can look excellent from a parking lot. A fine indoor wall can look cheap if the modules came from mixed production bins.

SFxDisplay rental cabinets are listed indoor and outdoor at P3.91, P2.9, P2.6, P1.9, and P1.5. Fixed mounting uses the same pitch logic with different frames. Two viewing-distance rules (they answer different questions)

1 mm ≈ 1 m (minimum). Treat pitch in millimeters as a minimum distance in meters. P2.6 means about 2.6 m (8.5 ft). Closer than that, many people start to see the grid, especially on flat color and small text. Event crews use this as a "you can live with it" floor.

10x rule in feet (comfortable). Multiply pitch in millimeters by 10 to get a comfortable distance in feet. P2.6 means about 26 ft (7.9 m). This is closer to where 20/20 vision stops resolving individual pixels. Churches, boardrooms, and retail should spec from this number.

Always measure the closest viewer you care about, not the average seat and not the back wall. The back row will be fine on almost any pitch you can afford. Row two, a pastor on the platform, and a camera 6 m from a backdrop are what expose a coarse wall.

Pixel pitch and viewing-distance chart (P1.5 to P3.91)

These are rules of thumb for a typical indoor module in a normally lit room, not a lab certificate for one cabinet. Outdoor use, content, and cameras all shift the feel.

If your front row is 20 ft (6.1 m) from the wall, P2.6 and P2.9 sit near the comfortable zone. P3.91 is well below its 39 ft comfort number. Front-row viewers may see structure on solid colors. That can still work as a concert texture. It is a poor choice for a 20 ft church IMAG wall.

If the closest walk-by is 5 ft (1.5 m), only P1.5 in this list is in range. That is a COB indoor or fine-pitch SMD conversation, not a P3.91 rental quote.

A 12-foot wall is not 4K

A common indoor request: the room already holds a 12 ft projection screen, closest seats are about 20 ft, farthest about 100 ft, and the buyer wants 4K later. They are shown a P2.5 or P2.6 wall and told it is the 4K option.

Count the pixels. A 12 ft wall is 3.66 m, or 3,658 mm, wide. Horizontal pixels = width in mm divided by pitch in mm.

  • P2.9 at 12 ft ≈ 1,261 pixels across
  • P2.6 at 12 ft ≈ 1,407 pixels across
  • P1.9 at 12 ft ≈ 1,925 pixels across
  • P1.5 at 12 ft ≈ 2,439 pixels across

UHD 4K is 3,840 pixels across. To hit that count on a 12 ft wall you need a pitch near 0.95 mm. P2.6 at 12 ft is about a 1,400-pixel-wide canvas (roughly 1400 x 790 at 16:9). That is useful HD-class IMAG. It is not 4K. P1.9 at 12 ft is about 1,920 pixels across, which matches Full HD, not UHD.

A processor can accept a 4K input and scale it. Scaling a 4K file onto 1,400 physical pixels does not create 4K on the wall. For that 12 ft room with a 20 ft closest seat, P1.9 or P2.6 rental is the practical shortlist. P1.5 is a premium if people walk up to the wall.

Smaller pitch is not always better

Finer pitch helps when people are close, when you show small text, or when cameras sit near a backdrop and start to pick up the grid. It does not look sharper from the back of a hall. From 30 m, P2.6 and P3.91 can look the same on typical video.

What rises as pitch shrinks: panel price, processor load, seam work, spare-module count, and often power. Outdoor P3.91 remains the touring workhorse because audiences sit far away. Filling a shop with P1.5 because "smaller is better" leaves expensive stock that few outdoor jobs will pay for. Permanent rooms have a different trap: P1.5 for a sanctuary whose front row is 8 m back. Put that budget into same-batch spares and a processor volunteers can run.

Used walls add a color-match risk that pitch cannot fix. Modules age. Different bins shift hue. A bargain P2.6 mixed from two used lots can show a checkerboard that a new P2.9 will not. If you expand a wall later, order extra modules from the original bin and keep them as spares.

Match pitch to the product

Rental screens are offered at P3.91 / 2.9 / 2.6 / 1.9 / 1.5. A first inventory buy is often outdoor P3.91 plus indoor P2.6 or P2.9. COB indoor belongs at fine pitches and close distances (COB vs SMD). Fixed cabinets follow the same chart. A trailer face is viewed from a road, so outdoor P3.91 is normal. For brightness and weather, use indoor vs outdoor LED walls.

What to send with a quote request

Send four numbers, not a pitch name: wall width and height, distance to the closest viewer you care about, indoor or outdoor (and whether cameras will shoot the wall), and the main content (IMAG, lyrics, ads, or video).

If your market needs CE, RoHS, or other paperwork, request the files that match that cabinet. Do not assume UL, ENERGY STAR, or ISO coverage without the report.

FAQ

Is P2.5 or P2.6 on a 12 ft wall 4K? No. A 12 ft (3.66 m) wall at P2.6 has about 1,400 pixels across. 4K UHD needs 3,840. On that width you would need a pitch near 1 mm.

We sit 20 ft from the screen and 100 ft at the back. Which pitch? Spec the 20 ft seats. Comfortable distance for P2.6 is about 26 ft. P2.6 or P1.9 is the usual shortlist. P3.91 will look coarse to the front row. The 100 ft seats will be fine on either.

Is the 1 mm = 1 m rule or the 10x feet rule correct? Both. The meter rule is a minimum for events. The 10x feet rule is a comfortable distance for rooms where people sit close. Churches, shops, and control rooms should use the farther number.

Will a smaller pitch fix moiré on our livestream? Sometimes it helps, because the camera resolves less of the grid. Distance, lens, shutter, and content matter as much. Demo the actual pitch with your cameras at the real throw.

Can we mix P2.6 modules from a used wall with new ones? You can hang them. You may not like the color. Used lots age and were often built from different LED bins. Budget new modules from one batch plus 5 to 10 percent same-bin spares.
